Sierra de Perijá

Duration: 3 dias-2 nights

Minimum Group- 4 people

The Sierra Perijá, located close to the Petrol city of Maracaibo, the second biggest city in the country, is a National Park of outstanding natural beauty, and home to various indigenous communities who live within the folds of the mountains. We will spend 3 days and 2 nights in the Sierra, staying with four indigenous communities (Toromo, Shirimi, Yukpa de Ayapaina, and Meseta Kunana), which is the perfect opportunity for you to share with time with them, speak to them, to observe their culture, religion, local products, and lifestyle.

We also will have the opportunity to see the National Park itself, and its great variety of vegetation and animal life. We will pass through jungle, forest and rivers on our way to the highlands. We will have the chance to not only feel the humid heat of Maracaibo, but the cool breeze of the mountains. We will see the highest peak of the Park, Pico Tectari, at 3650m, we will pass through various waterfalls, rivers, organic coffee plantations, all of which are vital to the existence of the communities. We will also be able to look for some of the animal life of the region: the monkeys,  birds, snakes, insects for example. We will sleep both nights in tents, on the outskirts of the villages. Wilst we will be on foot while we are in the National Park, the walks are short and smooth, and we will be with Mules to carry the camping equipment, food, etc as well.

The first day we leave from Maracaibo in jeep towards the community of Toromo, and after a walk of about 3 and a half hour we will arrive to the community of Shirimi. After lunch we will carry on through the jungle towards the community of Yukpa de Ayapaina (2 hours) where we will spend the night. The second dia  we walk towards the community of Meseta Kunana (2 hours) to see it, then return to the community of  Ayapaina. Here we will have the opportunity to swim in the rivers under the impressive Pico Tectari. The third day we  will walk towards the community of Shirimi (2 hours) where we will visit the water of the village (50 metres). From here we return to the city of Maracaibo.
